Game 66: Cavs at Bulls

CHICAGO BULLS (50-16) 107, CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (21-45) 75
United Center
Thursday
Radio/TV: WTAM (1100 AM)/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: Finally! It's over. The 2011-12 season came to an end. Thank goodness. The last quarter of the season has been almost unwatchable.

Now, we can move onto the important stuff: the NBA draft.

We're scheduled to hear from the players on Friday, along with Coach Byron Scott and General Manager Chris Grant. It will be interesting to hear what they have to say about Brandon Weeden. Oh, wait, that's the Browns. Sorry.

The Cavs won just 21 games this year and lost their last four. If not for the injuries, they might have been a playoff contender. We'll never know for sure.

They held guard Kyrie Irving out of the game on Thursday in the season finale. They wanted to make sure they didn't win. They can finish no lower than fifth in the draft heading into the May 30 draft lottery.

The Bulls were tied with San Antonio for the best record in the NBA. The Spurs played at Golden State late Thursday. The Bulls are 50-16. The Spurs have to win to tie for the top spot.

The Bulls finished the season with a three-game winning streak. They've had their way with the Cavs this season, winning the three games by a combined 92 points. Overall, they've won the last nine games against the Cavs, including their last four at the United Center.

The Bulls want to build some continuity heading into their first-round playoff matchup against Philadelphia on Saturday at home. Coach Tom Thibodeau rested guard Derrick Rose on Thursday.

Thibodeau, by the way, is going to get quite a few Coach of the Year honors. He won the award last season.

This has been a long, long season for the Cavs. They won two more games than last year, even though it was a shortened season. If healthy, this team is not bad. Add a couple pieces to the mix and it could be a playoff contender.

MILESTONE: Cavs forward Luke Walton played 367 minutes this year and didn't attempt a free throw. That set an NBA record.

Forward Omri Casspi hurt his knee in warmups and was held out of the game. It was the only game he missed the entire season.

UP NEXT: The 2012-13 season.

Game 65: Wizards at Cavs

WASHINGTON WIZARDS (19-46) 96, CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (21-44) 85

Quicken Loans Arena
Wednesday
Radio/TV: WTAM (1100 AM)/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: The Wizards have won their last five games. The biggest reason they won on Wednesday was because of the play of guard John Wall, along with the decision by the Cavs to rest several key performers.

Let's start with Wall, the No. 1 pick in the 2010 draft. If this guy could shoot from the perimeter, he'd be an All-NBA selection. He finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, 13 assists and seven steals. Just a crazy night. Of course, he turned the ball over six times in 32 minutes.

The Wizards' hot streak might be enough to save interim Coach Randy Wittman's job. On the other hand, it might not. That's a decision for General Manager Ernie Grunfeld, who recently signed an extension.

The Wizards have spent most of the season cleaning out some of the knuckleheads. They got rid of most of them, even though Andray Blatche and Jordan Crawford still remain on the roster. There's always the offseason ...

Wall is one of the most athletic players in the league. When he's leading the fastbreak, he's just a blur.

Cavs guard Kyrie Irving started and played 10 minutes. Then he sat, along with several key performers. Alonzo Gee was the only starter to play more than 18 minutes. The reason Irving played just 10 minutes was a "preventative situation," Coach Byron Scott said.

One smart aleck in the press room said, "Tank you very much."

The reason the Cavs didn't play their best players was because they want a better draft pick. They were tied for the third-worst record in the league. They want to make sure they don't win any more games.

That's why they won't play Irving on Thursday. And why many of the regulars will sit. We'll see a lot more of swingman D.J. Kennedy, who paced the Cavs in scoring with 12 points.

Irving was listed as doubtful for Wednesday's game because of the stomach flu. Then, after the game, he said he was "100 percent."

That's very odd.

He did say he got sick at around 4 a.m. Is he sick or isn't he?

When I asked him if he'd play before the game, he said, "I have to go lift weights," and walked out of the locker room.

Veteran forward Antawn Jamison said after the game his run with the Cavs will end after Thursday's game. He said it's time to move on and that he'd like to play for a contender.

The same can probably be said about guard Anthony Parker, who is expected to retire.

UP NEXT: The Cavs travel to Chicago at 8 p.m. Thursday at United Center.

Game 64: Cavs at Grizzlies

MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES (40-25) 109, CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (21-43) 101
FedExForum
Monday
Radio/TV: WTAM (1100 AM)/NBA TV, Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: The Grizzlies are operating under the radar this year, despite their great playoff run last season. They've won five in a row after Monday's game. They have the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference heading into the playoffs.

The Cavs have lost both games on the road trip. They have just two remaining on the schedule: home vs. Washington on Wednesday and at Chicago on Thursday. This was the only meeting with the Grizzlies this season.

The Grizzlies' starting backcourt is solid, especially on the defensive end. Shooting guard Tony Allen has lockdown ability. He was out of his mind on Monday with 13 points, eight rebounds and eight steals. Eight. That's the most against the Cavs by a player this season.

Strangely enough, it's point guard Mike Conley who the Grizzlies are touting for the All-Defensive team. Perhaps, it should be Allen.

Conley, the former Ohio State standout, is second in the NBA in steals at 2.24. He trails only Clippers guard Chris Paul. He's come on strong for the Grizzlies and has improved his outside shooting.

The Grizzlies' second unit is as good as any team in the league. It includes O.J. Mayo, Zach Randolph and Lester Hudson.

Cavs guard Kyrie Irving led all scorers with 25 points, four assists and three steals. Manny Harris had 11 points and Donald Sloan nine.

In his last six games, Harris is averaging 13.2 points and 4.8 rebounds and shooting 52 percent from the field. He’s playing like he has a chip on his shoulder and wants to get a leg up on next season.

MILESTONE: Forward Antawn Jamison passed Eddie Johnson to move into 44th place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. He’s 24 points shy of No. 43 Bob Lanier, who has 19,248 points. Former Cavs teammate LeBron James is right on Jamison’s tail. He is ranked 47th with 19,045 points.

UP NEXT: The Cavs host Washington at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Quicken Loans Arena.

STARTERS
SF Alonzo Gee (6-6, 219) vs. Rudy Gay (6-8, 230)

Game 63: Cavs at Spurs

SAN ANTONIO SPURS (47-16) 114, CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (21-42) 98
AT&T Center
Sunday
Radio/TV: WTAM (1100 AM)/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: The Spurs have the second best record in the NBA and the top mark in the Western Conference. They've won seven in a row after Sunday's game.

Gregg Popovich will garner many Coach of the Year votes. He's won the award just once, in 2002-03. Maybe that's why he's so cantankerous with the media. He can be downright rude at times.

I've always admired him, however. He doesn't bow to anyone in the league. He does his own thing. He's the longest tenured coach in the four major sports.

Pop decided to rest future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan against the Cavs. They didn't need him, as they shot 54.5 percent from the field.

Guard Manu Ginobili came off the bench and scored a game-high 20 points and dished out three assists. He made 9 of 12 field goals. Age is creeping up on the veteran, but he knows how to play the game.

Very few expected the Spurs to be the top seed in the West this year. I'm still sticking with Oklahoma City to come out of the West, but the Spurs are going to be difficult to eliminate from the playoffs.

The Cavs, meanwhile, have just three games left in the regular season. Two of them are on the road. They are in Memphis on Monday and in Chicago on Thursday. In case, you didn't hear, Thursday is now a national holiday, at least in Cleveland. It's the first day of the NFL draft.

The Cavs should have checked with the Browns before scheduling a game on the holiday. It is the last game of the season for the Cavs, and good riddance. This losing stuff is for the birds.

Coach Byron Scott has been hinting that guard Kyrie Irving won't play in the remaining three games. I think he will, for some reason. He really wants to close out strong.

Forward Antawn Jamison paced the Cavs on Sunday with 21 points, while Irving had 19 points and three assists.

Scott stuck with Manny Harris as the starting shooting guard and he responded with 14 points and four rebounds. I like his energy. He's playing with confidence and swagger. The Cavs should ride that out.

Spurs guard Tony Parker is being mentioned as an MVP candidate - not a winner, mind you, but he's going to get top 5 votes. Well, his numbers are very similar to Irving's. Parker is averaging 18.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 0.98 steals. He's shooting 47.8 percent from the field.

Irving is averaging 18.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.00 steals. He's shooting 46.5 percent from the field.

What does that tell you? Maybe this Irving kid isn't half bad?

Forward Alonzo Gee returned after a three-game absence with a sprained left ankle. He had 10 points and five rebounds in 19 minutes. It was good to have him back. He brings such energy. I'd continue to bring him off the bench for the rest of the season, and next year as well.

Newly acquired D.J. Kennedy didn't play for the Cavs.

UP NEXT: The Cavs travel to Memphis at 8 p.m. Monday at FedExForum.

STARTERS
SF Anthony Parker (6-6, 210) vs. Kawhi Leonard (6-6, 225)
PF Antawn Jamison (6-9, 235) vs. Boris Diaw (6-8, 235)

Game 62: Knicks at Cavs

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (21-41) 98, NEW YORK KNICKS (33-30) 90
Quicken Loans Arena
Friday
Radio/TV: WTAM (1100 AM)/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: Someone please explain why the Cavs have such success over the Knicks at home? It just doesn't make sense.

All they have to do is show up and beat the Knicks, who haven't won at The Q since Nov. 29, 2006 - a streak of 10 consecutive games.

The Cavs played with such energy on Friday. If they play like that, they've shown they can beat almost anyone.

Of course, they can play like that on Sunday and still lose by 10 points to San Antonio.

Guard Manny Harris was a joy to watch on Friday. It was his best game of the season - by far - with 19 points, 12 rebounds and two assists.

He was very active on defense. He got his hands on a lot of balls and just pounded the defensive boards.

Of course, having Kyrie Irving back is magical for the Cavs. They feel they can compete with him in the lineup. He had 21 points, three rebounds and three assists. He made 6 of 15 from the field.

If the Cavs can surround him with some talent, the Cavs are going to be very good next year.

The Cavs and Knicks tied the season series, 2-2. Knicks coach Mike Woodson is now 15-6 since taking over for Mike D'Antoni. He is making a serious claim for the job full-time.

Forward Alonzo Gee (sprained left ankle) missed his third consecutive game. Coach Byron Scott finally pulled the plug on Luke Walton, who got a DNP-CD.

UP NEXT: The Cavs travel to San Antonio at 7 p.m. Sunday at AT&T Center.

STARTERS
SF Anthony Parker (6-6, 210) vs. Carmelo Anthony (6-8, 230)
PF Antawn Jamison (6-9, 235) vs. Amar'e Stoudemire (6-11, 260)

Game 61: 76ers at Cavs

PHILADELPHIA 76ERS (32-30) 103, CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (20-41) 87

Quicken Loans Arena
Wednesday
Radio/TV: WTAM (1100 AM)/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: It was great getting Kyrie Irving back for the Cavs. However, it didn't change the outcome in any way. Unless there's a drastic change, they could lose their five games on the schedule.

I don't think the Cavs have any intention of bringing center Anderson Varejao back. Coach Byron Scott said Andy wants to play, but he's still experiencing some soreness in his fractured wrist.

The 76ers looked like the team that ran roughshod over the Cavs three times this year by a combined 47 points. They have something to play for - the No. 8 playoff spot in the East. They have a tough road ahead of them, as their last four games are all on the road.

But they now have a 2 1/2-game lead over Milwaukee for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Sixers looked like they were going to run away with the Atlantic Division. Fans in Philadelphia are worried, and rightfully so.

The difference in the game was the play of Jrue Holiday (24 points, 6 of 6 from behind the arc) and Andre Iguodala (19 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and two steals).

Teams are routinely shooting better than 50 percent from the field on the Cavs. Of course, on Tuesday, the Pistons shot 60 percent. That's got to stop.

UP NEXT: The Cavs host New York at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Quicken Loans Arena.

STARTERS
SF Anthony Parker (6-6, 210) vs. Andre Iguodala (6-6, 207)

Game 60: Cavs at Pistons

DETROIT PISTONS (23-38) 116, CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (20-40) 77
The Palace of Auburn Hills
Tuesday
Radio/TV: WTAM (1100 AM)/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: The season can't end quick enough. The Cavs had just nine players available. Six players were out of the lineup.

But does that have anything to do with the Cavs trailing, 100-50, after the third quarter? Fifty points. Really? To the Pistons? They aren't much better off than the Cavs. In their last two meetings with the Cavs, though, they've won with little resistance.

They not only scored 116 points, but shot a season-high 60 percent from the field. The 39-point differential matches the Cavs' worst loss of the season.

Forward Alonzo Gee was held out of the game with an ankle injury. He joined Daniel Gibson, Kyrie Irving, Anderson Varejao and Semih Erden among the walking wounded. Luke Harangody is on a D-League assignment.

That pushed Omri Casspi into the starting lineup. He finished with 11 points, four rebounds and three steals. He wasn't bad, and hasn't been that bad in the last couple weeks.

Forward Antawn Jamison cornered the market on bad on Tuesday. He was 0 of 10 from the field, 0 of 4 from the 3-point line. He ended with more turnovers (four) than points (three). His plus/minus number was -47. It that possible?

The Cavs turned the ball over 19 times, which led to 29 points for the Pistons.

They were led by Manny Harris' season-high 18 points. Guard Lester Hudson was off, as well, as he made just 2 of 10 from the field en route to seven points.

Irving tested his sprained shoulder in shootaround on Tuesday at The Palace. If he has no soreness on Wednesday and gets medical clearance, he could be in the starting lineup on Wednesday vs. Philly.

Some wonder why the Cavs are even toying with the idea of bringing him back. It's hard to tell a player who is healthy enough to play that he can't.

These games have been almost unwatchable as of late. Having him back will help, as long as he doesn't re-injure his shoulder.

It doesn't look to me that center Anderson Varejao is going to make it back on the court. He still has some soreness in his fractured wrist. And, while we're on the subject, the Cavs should tell him he can't play this summer for Brazil in the Summer Olympics in London. It's too risky.

UP NEXT: The Cavs host Philadelphia at 7 Wednesday at Quicken Loans Arena.

Game 59: Magic at Cavs

ORLANDO MAGIC (35-25) 100, CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (20-39) 84

Quicken Loans Arena
Sunday
Radio/TV: WTAM (1100 AM)/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: The Cavs totally ran out of gas on Sunday. It was the third game in three nights, and they played like it.

It was a terribly ragged game. No flow. No continuity and a heck of a lot of turnovers (18). That led to 23 points by the Magic.

They finished 1-2 in the three games, winning the middle game on Saturday. The Cavs weren't able to win without forward Luke Harangody on Sunday. He went back to the D-League on Sunday for the Charge's playoff game.

NBA teams are 19-19 this year playing on the third game in three nights.

Sunday's game was almost unwatchable. The Magic played without center Dwight Howard, who has a herniated disk in his back. Big Baby Davis started at center and was knocked out with a knee injury in the first quarter.

That gave the Magic a look at little-used Daniel Orton, and they had to like what they saw. He had 11 points, four rebounds, five steals and three blocks.

Cavs guard Lester Hudson played just 16 minutes and had just six points. Coach Byron Scott wanted to see more of Manny Harris, who had 10 points and four rebounds.

UP NEXT: The Cavs travel to Detroit at 7:30 Tuesday at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

STARTERS
SF Alonzo Gee (6-6, 219) vs. Jason Richardson (6-6, 225)

Game 58: Cavs at Wizards

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (20-38) 98, WASHINGTON WIZARDS (14-46) 89

Verizon Center
Saturday
Radio/TV: WMMS (100.7 FM)/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: The Cavs are playing the second leg of their three-game weekend set. Coach Byron Scott decided he was going to rest forward Antawn Jamison in one of the three games. This was the one they picked.

It was the first game Jamison has missed all season, which is quite amazing since he's 35 years old. He really is a remarkable athlete, though.

The Cavs recalled forward Luke Harangody from the D-League Canton Charge on Saturday. He started against the Wizards at power forward and had a nice game. He finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs.

There are things to like about Harangody. He's not overly talented, but he hustles his butt off on every play. Some young players can learn from him.

It was the Cavs' 20th win of the season. Many never thought they'd get any where close to 20 wins. All five starters reached double figures, which was impressive.

Harangody returned to the D-League after the game. He will play for Canton in Game 2 of the Charge's best-of-three playoff series against Springfield on Sunday.

The Cavs are playing without the services of center Semih Erden (ankle), guard Kyrie Irving (shoulder), center Anderson Varejao (wrist) and guard Daniel Gibson (foot) in Saturday's game.

Wizards coach Randy Wittman is also short-handed, as forwards Rashard Lewis (knee), Trevor Booker (foot) and Andray Blatche (conditioning) and center Nene (foot) missed Saturday's game.

UP NEXT: The Cavs host Orlando at 6 p.m. Sunday at Quicken Loans Arena.

Game 57: Cavs at Pacers

INDIANA PACERS (37-22) 102, CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (19-38) 83

Bankers Life Fieldhouse
Friday
Radio/TV: WTAM/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: There aren't many positive aspects to this game for the Cavaliers, other than Omri Casspi leading the team in scoring with 14 points and five rebounds.

Point guard Donald Sloan added 12 points, four rebounds and five assists. The Cavs had just 16 assists on 28 field goals.

Their shooting percentage was 35.4 percent. It's really amazing how poorly the Cavs shoot the ball from the field. That's one reason why scoring punch is needed in the worst way from the wing positions.

The Pacers took a 3-1 lead in the season series with the Cavs. It was the first time this year, however, they've beaten the Cavs in regulation. The previous two wins were both in overtime.

The Cavs were without the services of center Semih Erden (ankle), guard Kyrie Irving (shoulder), center Anderson Varejao (wrist) and guard Daniel Gibson (foot) in Friday's game. Also, forward Luke Harangody remains in the D-League for Canton's playoff run.

Of course, it's all about Lester Hudson now with the Cavs. It's been fun to watch him play in the nine games in which he's played. He's averaged 14.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists. He's become their go-to player.

However, he had a rare off night with seven points and one assist against the Pacers. He turned the ball over five times, 11 in the last two games.

Is he human after all?

Hudson and point guard Donald Sloan have been getting the bulk of the time in the backcourt. To me, they both look like keepers.

This is the first game of a back-to-back-to-back set for the Cavs. They are also in the midst of five games in six nights and seven in nine. The players better get their rest during this stretch or they will break down.

UP NEXT: The Cavs travel to Washington at 7 p.m. Saturday at Verizon Center.

Game 56: Pacers at Cavs

INDIANA PACERS (36-22) 104, CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (19-37) 98 (OT)

Quicken Loans Arena
Wednesday
Radio/TV: WTAM/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: The Pacers might have taken the Cavs lightly on Wednesday. They didn't expect them to actually compete when the going got tough.

The Pacers currently have the third seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race. They are also 17-14 on the road, which ensures them of a winning road record for the first time in eight years, and just the fourth time in its NBA history.

The Cavs and Pacers will hook up again on Friday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Pacers now have a 2-1 lead in the season series.

In their only win in the season series, it was center Semih Erden who went off with 18 points and eight rebounds against the Pacers on Feb. 15. That didn't happen again on Wednesday because he sprained his ankle in the second quarter. I wouldn't be surprised if he's out for the rest of the season. They have only 10 games left.

What it does is eliminate their depth at center. Samardo Samuels is the only other "big" on the bench. He played well against the Pacers with 13 points and five rebounds. Is he consistent enough to play that way all the time? Probably not.

The Pacers found a way to slow down the Legend of Lester. Guard Lester Hudson had 19 points, six rebounds and two assists. But he shot poorly: 8 of 20 from the field, 1 of 9 from behind the arc. He also committed six turnovers and had five personal fouls.

Coach Byron Scott is giving him the green light to fire. Of course, that wouldn't be the case if Kyrie Irving were playing. But he's not, and might not for the rest of the season.

Scott said Irving and center Anderson Varejao are out for the Friday and Saturday road games for sure. They might be checked out by team doctors when the Cavs return home on Sunday. It's looking more and more like they will not play again this season.

MOONDOG UPDATE: Pacers forward David West said he feels terrible about inadvertently hitting Moondog, the Cavs mascot, while they were engaged in horseplay.

"I feel terrible about that," West said. "I really do. We were just having fun right before the game. We were just messing around. I really hope he's OK. Make sure he knows I'm sorry."

Moondog received medical treatment.

Game 55: Bobcats at Cavs

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (19-36) 103, CHARLOTTE BOBCATS (7-49) 90
Quicken Loans Arena
Tuesday
Radio/TV: WTAM/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: The Bobcats couldn't slow down Lester Hudson in the fourth quarter. The Cavs ripped through the Bobcats in the final quarter, 31-19, to leave them in the dust.

Hudson had 25 points, eight rebounds and six assists. He's averaging 24.7 points in his last three games. The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder has appeared in seven games for the Cavs this season, averaging 14.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.4 steals in 25.5 minutes per game.

He's really making a name for himself. I truly believe he should be brought back next season.

Hudson, 27, is not a great defender and he's not a high-percentage shooter, but he can score.

I was really impressed with Anthony Parker's game. He had 19 points, two rebounds and two steals. In his last two games, he's averaged 23 points.

AP returned to the lineup on Tuesday after a two-game absence with a bruised sternum.

Little-used center Semih Erden ended up playing 16 minutes for the Cavs. He pulled down seven rebounds and blocked a shot. Coach Byron Scott tried forward/center Samardo Samuels first. When he didn’t get what he wanted from Samuels, he went further down the bench to the 7-foot Erden.

Tuesday’s game was the first in a stretch of seven games in nine days. The last time the Cavs had seven games in nine days was from April 6-14, 1999. The was the last lockout year in the NBA. The end of the stretch is the back-to-back-to-back games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

UP NEXT: The Cavs host Indiana at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Quicken Loans Arena.

Game 54: Cavs at Nets

NEW JERSEY NETS (21-37) 122, CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (18-36) 117 (OT)
Prudential Center
Sunday
Radio/TV: WTAM/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: The Cavs stumbled in overtime, but it was a wildly entertaining game between two of the Eastern Conference's also-rans. It was especially fun in the fourth quarter when Nets swingman Gerald Green and Cavs guard Lester Hudson were trading 3-pointers.

Hudson had a career-high 26 points in 29 minutes. He was 9 of 22 from the field, 6 of 12 from behind the arc. He's averaging 24.5 points in his last two.

His 10-day contract expired after Sunday's game. The Cavs' options are to let him walk, sign him to a second 10-day deal or sign him for the rest of the season. I would recommend the latter.

Starting point guard Donald Sloan dished out a career-high 14 assists in 45 minutes.

The Cavs were 2-2 against the Nets this sesason. Sunday's Easter Day game could be the last time the Cavs play in New Jersey. The Nets are expected to move to Brooklyn next year.

The Cavs' starting backcourt of Kyrie Irving (shoulder) and Anthony Parker (sternum) missed the game.

Center Tristan Thompson had 27 points and 12 rebounds the last time he played in New Jersey on March 19. On Sunday, he finished with 15 points, a career-high 15 rebounds and two blocks. That included 10 offensive rebounds.

Speaking of offensive rebounds, he couldn't prevent several offensive rebounds by the Nets in the late going by Sheldon Williams and Kris Humphries.

The Nets decided to shut down center Brook Lopez (foot) for the rest of the season. That puts a lot of the scoring load on point guard Deron Williams, who is averaging 21.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 8.7 assists. He has the NBA highs this year in points (57) and assists (20).

Game 53: Cavs at Raptors

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (18-35) 84, TORONTO RAPTORS (20-36) 80
Air Canada Centre
Friday
Radio/TV: WTAM/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: Despite being ravaged by injuries and losing their coach with 53.1 seconds left in the first half, the Cavs fought down the stretch and snapped their nine-game losing streak.

It also came against the Raptors, who had pounded the Cavs three times this season starting with the season opener on Dec. 26. They had won by a combined 31 points in the three losses.

The Cavs found out earlier in the day that they'd be without Anthony Parker, their starting shooting guard. They moved the erratic Manny Harris into that role, but it was Lester Hudson who was the difference in the game.

Hudson had a career-high 23 points, two rebounds, seven assists and three steals. He shot 6 of 14 from the field, 0 of 4 from behind the arc and 11 of 13 from the foul line. He might have found a home. Don't be surprised if he's signed for the rest of the season.

The Cavs were also playing without leading scorer Kyrie Irving, starting center Anderson Varejao and guard Daniel Gibson.

Coach Byron Scott was ejected late in the first half by official Kane Fitzgerald. He voiced his concern about a call, got two quick technicals and was gone. It was his first ejection this season. He might hear from the NBA office for cursing at the ref on his way off the court.

Paul Pressey, his lead assistant, took over for Scott and guided them home.

Forward Antawn Jamison caught fire in the second half and paced the Cavs with 25 points and eight rebounds. He was 8 of 16 from the field, 3 of 5 from behind the arc.

There's a chance both Irving (sprained shoulder) and Varejao (fractured wrist) will be shut down for the rest of the season. One can make the case that it doesn't make a lot of sense for either of them to play.

Raptors point guard Jose Calderon had a nasty black eye after running into Sixers big man Elton Brand. Calderon sat out the game in favor of former Cavs guard Ben Uzoh, who is playing on a 10-day contract.

He isn't the only player signed to 10-day deals that had Cavs' ties. They plucked guard/forward Alan Anderson from the D-League Canton Charge on March 26.

Jamison was the only Cavs' starter that reached double figures in scoring. Forward/center Samardo Samuels added 10 points and seven rebounds.

UP NEXT: The Cavs travel to New Jersey 6 p.m. Sunday at Prudential Center.

STARTERS

Game 52: Cavs at Bucks

MILWAUKEE BUCKS (26-28) 107, CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (17-35) 98
Bradley Center
Wednesday
Radio/TV: WTAM/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: There are no moral victories in the NBA. However, Coach Byron Scott has to feel much better about his team after the way it competed against the Bucks. That's half the battle now. Just getting them to play hard.

With the talent they're putting on the court, the Cavs are going to have trouble winning games. They've lost nine in a row, as well as 12 of the last 13.

There were some encouraging signs from Wednesday's game. Veteran shooting guard Anthony Parker tied his career high with 27 points. He was 11 of 14 from the field, 4 of 7 from the arc.

He had a wonderful all-around game with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Why can't he do that once in a while? He's more than capable.

All five starters scored in double figures, including guard Donald Sloan with 12 points and eight assists. He was 5 of 12 from the field. The Cavs might have something here. Sloan is auditioning for the backup point guard job.

The Cavs dished out 27 assists, which is a positive sign.

Bucks guard Monta Ellis got into a scoring duel with Parker and won. He had a game-high 30 points, eight assists and five rebounds. He was 15 of 25 from the field and scored the Bucks' final 12 points.

Some have wondered if the Cavs will win again this season. It's a legitimate question. The law of averages say they will.

But watching them on the court in the last couple of weeks, one has to wonder. The latest salvo was the shoulder sprain by Kyrie Irving. He'll be sidelined for a week to 10 days. That could be about five to seven games. There's no guarantee he'll return at all.

Get used to seeing a lot of Sloan and Lester Hudson. Both players were call-ups from the D-League and both have shown some promise. Hudson had nine points, five rebounds and six assists. He shot just 3 of 13 from the field and missed all six of his 3-point attempts.

The Cavs have lost seven in a row to the Bucks.

Cavs center Anderson Varejao said he's still experiencing soreness in his right wrist. Everyone seems to expect him back next week, but that might not be the case. There's a chance he won't return at all this year.

UP NEXT: The Cavs travel to Toronto at 7 p.m. Friday at Air Canada Centre.

STARTERS
SF Alonzo Gee (6-6, 219) vs. Luc Mbah a Moute (6-8, 230)

Game 51: Spurs at Cavs

SAN ANTONIO SPURS (37-14) 125, CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (17-34) 90

Quicken Loans Arena
Tuesday
Radio/TV: WTAM/Fox Sports Ohio

WHAT HAPPENED: Less than a month ago, the Cavs were competing for the No. 8 playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Where has that team gone?

Are these guys tuning out Coach Byron Scott and his coaching staff? I hope that's not the case, but that's the way it appears on the court.

Sure, this team has turned into the Fort Wayne Mad Ants (one of my favorite D-League teams). There are guys playing prominent roles that shouldn't be in the league.

They have some major housecleaning to do in the offseason. But you can't get rid of 75 percent of the team. One or two nice draft picks aren't going to make much difference on this team. This team needs some grizzled vets who won't put up with anything like this.

Tonight's loss was one of the worst in team history. Teams don't lose by 35 points at home often in this league, even a team as bad as the Cavs through the years.

They ran into a very good team tonight. But that has nothing to do with how the Cavs played tonight: No fire, no intensity, no grit.

This team was fun to watch earlier this season. That's not the case any longer. In fact, it's almost unbearable to watch now.

The Spurs are the league's hottest team, having won eight in a row.

They have vaulted up to the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference behind Oklahoma City.

The Cavs? They've crumbled like a five-day-old cookie. Their offense has gone in the dumper, largely because they don't have anyone making shots.

NOTES: Antawn Jamison moved past Dale Ellis and Reggie Theus for 46th on the NBA's all-time scoring list with 19,017 points. Strangely enough, they were all the same type of player - major chuckers.

-- The Cavs shot a season-high 86.7 percent from the foul line (13 of 15).

-- Future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan is still going strong. The 6-11, 255-pounder has 17 double-doubles this season. He's 16th in the NBA with 9.0 rebounds per game. He's averaging 15.2 points.

-- The Spurs had 23 layups or dunks on the night. When Tiago Splitter was in the game, it was like a layup drill.

--The Spurs have a former Cavs draft pick starting at shooting guard in Danny Green. He was a second-round pick in 2009. Some think the Cavs should have drafted DeJuan Blair with their first-round pick that year instead of draft bust Christian Eyenga. Blair's knees scared off many teams, one of them being the Cavs. Eyenga was included in the Ramon Sessions trade to the Los Angeles Lakers.

UP NEXT: The Cavs travel to Milwaukee at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bradley Center.

STARTERS

Jordan said he's not selling Bobcats

April 1, 2012 – Bobcats Sports & Entertainment Chairman Michael Jordan today released the following statement:

"I was disturbed to hear the false report that I intend to sell my majority interest in the Charlotte Bobcats.  I am 100% committed to building the Bobcats into a contender and have no plans to sell the team."

Bobcats Sports & Entertainment owns the Charlotte Bobcats and operates Charlotte’s Time Warner Cable Arena.
